Lake Wheeler picnic
Hi {{ first name | Raleigh Lover}}!
What a week! We kicked things off exploring Halifax County, a new and easy getaway from Raleigh that’s packed with charm and history. While we didn’t make it to Lake Gaston this time, we connected with the friendly locals, savored standout farm-to-table dining, sipped award-winning whiskey at Weldon Mills Distillery, and wandered Revolutionary War sites where America’s freedom story began. A highlight? Getting face to face with exotic feathered friends at Sylvan Heights Bird Park — including the mighty Australian cassowary (pro tip: admire those dino toes from a distance!).
Then I swapped history for salty air and campus life with a quick escape to Wrightsville Beach for Kalyra’s orientation at UNCW. I’m currently writing this from the buzzing Sunday Café, heart full and sun-kissed after mornings of sunrise yoga on the pier, ocean swims, and even a ghost tour through Wilmington’s historic streets.
This beach town has held a special place in my heart since our first visit in 2004 — actually, probably even before that, thanks to Dawson’s Creek! With its laid-back surf vibe, it always felt a bit like home. And now, knowing Kalyra will call this place home for the next four years makes it even more meaningful. I’m finally seeing the true magic of the American college experience — it’s not just about the degree, but about shaping confident, compassionate young adults in a community that uplifts and inspires.
Here’s to new discoveries, proud parenting moments, and places that steal your heart in unexpected ways.

Sunrise yoga with Be Unlimited Yoga - only $10
The charred octopus from Brassiere du Soleil - best I’ve probably had in the USA.. Same owners as Croquette in Raleigh so similar French vibe.
I enjoyed the Sylvan Heights Bird Park more than I thought I would. You could easily visit on a day trip - families will love this form of summer entertainment and education!
On the way to or from the bird park, enjoy a coffee and cake at Larema Coffee House in Rocky Mount - a perfect cup!
A tour of Weldon Mills Distillery was a fantastic experience as was the samples included after AND their cocktails in their small bar.
The Wilmington ghost tour was a great way to learn more about the history of Wilmington and its haunting spirits. Ending in the cemetary as darkness descended was a little unnerving!!

Vapes will become illegal in North Carolina on July 1. Seems strange since every second store now seems to be a vape one!
Guy's Pizza Joint (as in Guy Fieri) is officially open at RDU Airport! I think we have so many great locally owned pizza places. I wish they opened instead. But I have not ever tried this pizza so maybe it’s can’t-live-without.
