This Week in Raleigh: Time to vote + International Women's Day, Reptile & Plant Expo, and more

On Friday, I did something I’ve waited a long time to do. I voted.

I had to do early voting so I could register on site. And you better believe I walked in holding my brand-new citizenship certificate like it was an Oscar trophy.

I made sure everyone saw it and I may or may not have gleefully announced to multiple people, “It’s my first time voting!”

In Australia, voting is compulsory. You grow up going to the polls like it’s just something you do — snag a sausage sizzle, cast your ballot, carry on with your day. So, I’m no stranger to voting.

But for the past eight years, since we’ve been back here in the U.S., I haven’t been able to. On Friday, it felt like something clicked back into place. A small but meaningful sense of power. A reminder that my voice — even one single voice — matters.

Do I know if we’re on a clear path toward unity and strength right now? Honestly, it doesn’t feel that way right now. But I do know this: opting out guarantees nothing changes.

So, I’ll keep showing up. I’ll keep participating. I’ll give it all I’ve got. If you haven’t voted yet, this is your reminder: voting happens tomorrow. Please exercise your right to vote. It’s a privilege.
